Here for sale we have a Yamaha Super Axe SA-900 semi-hollow electric guitar in Sunburst finish. The Super Axe series was introduced in the late '60s with the SA-20 to SA-75 models, which grew in popularity throughout the '70s thanks to their excellent build quality. By the early '80s the line included the much revered SA-2000 and the SA-800. This SA-900 was likely only intended for sale on the Japanese domestic market as it is not present in Yamaha's catalogues from the time. The Super Axe guitars have remained a popular instrument amongst jazz players thanks to their similarities to Gibson's ES series, high quality and relatively low price.
This example was made in Japan in 1983, as indicated by the 'Made In Japan' stamp along with the serial number. This makes it one of the rarer models, as many of the Super Axe series were made in Taiwan at this time. A semi-hollow set-neck construction is employed, and comprises a Laminated Beech & Birch body, Mahogany neck and 22 fret Rosewood fingerboard. Chrome hardware is fitted including a TOM style bridge and stop tail, as well as a set of sealed Yamaha tuning machines. A pair of Yamaha Alnico V SHA & SAII humbucking pickups are installed, and are wired to a 3-way toggle switch and independent volume & tone controls.
The Mahogany neck plays fantastically well, with a profile which might be described as a moderately-sized 'C' shape, which offers a smooth and responsive playing experience across the register. The gloss finish to the rear assists with navigation of the 24.75" scale, whilst the dual cutaway body design enhances access to the upper register. The Rosewood of the fingerboard is nice and dark in appearance and provides a luxurious playing surface. Its 12" radius is traditional for a guitar of this style, and is practical for all manner of playing styles and techniques. The semi-hollow construction keeps the weight relatively low whilst providing that thinline big-body feel.
Amplified, the pair of Yamaha Alnico V humbucking pickups deliver thick and full-bodied tones which work well in a wide variety of musical contexts. There is plenty of grunt available for crunch and overdrive sounds, perfect for rock and blues players. The neck position produces a round and smooth tone, which can even be made dark and jazzy by rolling back the tone control. The semi-hollow construction ensures a lively and responsive feel whilst improving the dynamic range and response of the instrument. A typically well made and great sounding guitar from Yamaha.

Aesthetic Condition:
Headstock: Overall very good condition. All aspects of the headstock demonstrate clouding of the finish which is typical of Yamaha guitars from this era. The top edge demonstrates light indentation, chipping the finish to the front treble side corner. Further lighter indentation can be identified to the perimeter of the headstock. The sides of the headstock demonstrate light to moderate scratching in places, consistent with the use of a string winder.
Neck: Overall very good condition, the rear of the neck demonstrates clouding of the finish which is typical of Yamaha guitars from this era. The fingerboard demonstrates light indentation in the early register, consistent with regular playwear. The rear of the neck demonstrates light scratching throughout the register which cannot be felt under the thumb in playing position.
Body: Overall very good condition, all aspects of the body demonstrate clouding of the finish which is typical of Yamaha guitars from this era. This is most notable around the perimeter of the front and rear faces, where there is a contrast between the clouded areas and non-clouded areas. The front face demonstrates some moderate scratching piercing the finish slightly to the center of the lower bout. Further lighter scratching can be identified to either side of the pickups consistent with the use of a plectrum. Light to mild scratching to all aspects of the body is visible under close scrutiny, most notably at the side of the instrument on the bottom edge near the controls.
Condition of Frets:
The frets demonstrate mild signs of use, with light indentation in the early register and flattening of the crowns throughout. This does not affect playability. There is moderate room remaining in the frets for future fret work.
