Here for sale we have a breathtaking Wilborn Orchestra guitar in Gloss Natural nitrocellulose lacquer finish. Specializing in steel-stringed instruments, Ben Wilburn in Reno, Nevada, is the owner of Wilborn Guitars, and has set up his one man operation dedicated to making guitars where the tonality and voicing of the timber is the showpiece of the instrument. Not allowing indulgent filigree to detract from the intended purpose of the guitars he builds, Ben personally selects only the finest cuts of timber to craft his guitars, and planes, assembles and finishes each piece to ensure both optimal tonality and playability. That is not to say that his guitars are not works of art, with this example boasting tasteful detailing that add finishing touches to an outstanding instrument.
Leaving the workshop in August 2014, this Wilborn Orchestra guitar features a bolt on neck construction, an increasingly common feature of high end acoustic guitars to allow for easier adjustment. This instrument comprises a Lutz Spruce top, Figured Myrtle back and sides, Peruvian Walnut neck and 21 fret Ebony fingerboard and matching front and rear headstock veneer. The OM body is bound with Bloodwood, as is the ornate Rosette which features a simple diamond logo at the bottom, which matches the uniquely shaped soundhole design. The nut and saddle are crafted from Bone, as is the logo which is a particularly incredible small detail which highlights the craftsmanship on display. The B/W/B purfling adds a distinguished finishing touch to the guitar, with open gear Grover tuners completing the timeless look.
The Peruvian Walnut neck is an absolute joy to play, with the Contemporary ‘C’ neck shape sitting comfortable in the hand. The profile is very even and the slim depth allows the moderately wide 1.75” nut width to retain a very playable feel, finding the perfect balance between offering a substantial grip and allowing for fluid playability across all registers. The Ebony of the fretboard is supremely luxurious under the fingers whilst providing a smooth and durable playing surface. The smooth lines and modest stature of the body are very comfortable in the arms, ensuring that long playing sessions are fatigue free.
The acoustic voicing of this instrument is extraordinarily well balanced, with the OM shape of this guitar is loosely based on the Martin OM design, and provides a rich, warm quality to the midrange, a tremendous bass, and a sparkly and defined high end. The use of Myrtle is an inspired choice for the back and sides of this instrument, as it is a tonewood which boasts qualities from Mahogany, Rosewood and Maple, to further accentuate the perfect balance of this guitar. The Lutz Spruce Top is the perfect soundboard for this guitar, providing a crisp and voluminous voicing which is sensitive to the players dynamics to allow this guitar to perfectly respond to the players intentions. Whilst being a style which typically appeals to fingerstyle players, this is a guitar that is truly a jack of all trades and will leave no guitarist disappointed.
