Here for sale we have an incredibly rare Rivera Bonehead 100w all-valve electric guitar amplifier head. Already a rare amplifier, we believe this particular example was produced for an italian trade show due to information provided by the owner, the lack of serial number and the fact that the power supply is configured for european voltage.
Rivera is a small Californian boutique amplifier and effects manufacturer, founded by Paul Rivera in August 1985. Rivera had spent the preceding decade professionally modifying amplifiers for session musicians in the LA music scene and working at Fender, integrating his modifications into new designs like the Super Champ. He disliked working in a corporate environment however, and struck out alone to produce his own products, helping to popularise the boutique and hot-rodded market alongside the likes Mesa/Boogie, Soldano & Bogner.
Rivera developed the Bonehead with Steve Lukather. Having previously modded some of Steve's amps, Rivera and Lukather worked together on this model; quite similar in design and control layout to the slightly more common, yet still boutique Knucklehead which Lukather was a fan of. The Bonehead however is voiced differently and features a special 'Los Lobottom' control (in reference to Lukather's group Los Lobotomys) which requires a special cabinet to be connected, boosting the low end output.
The Bonehead is a highly versatile amplifier, featuring three channels with independent three band EQ. Each of the EQ bands on the clean channel has a pull function. Pulling the treble control selects the 'Bright' mode. Pulling the mid control engages a sweepable notch and pulling the bass control selects bass contour- essentially a bass boost. Each channel has a boost which can be engaged by pressing the gain control or using the footswitch. The rear panel features a Vintage/Modern mode select switch, as well as speaker output impedance selectors. The power of the amp can be switched between 100w, 50w, 25w & 12w modes using a combination of the Vintage/Modern and High/Low power switches on the rear panel. A footswitchable FX loop is also included. A seriously versatile amplifier for any session player.
