Here for sale we have a very special Martin OMJM 20th Anniversary John Mayer Signature electro-acoustic guitar in Platinum Gray Burst finish. The instrument was available to order from Martin for a limited time between 2023 & August 2024, with the number produced estimated somewhere between 1200 & 1500. The guitar was produced to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the popular OM-28JM model, which was first available in 2003 around the time of John's 'Heavier Things' album. The OM-28JM was part of a limited run of just 404 instruments, in honour of the Atlanta area code where John was living at the time. Due to it's scarcity & the continuing meteoric rise of Mayer in the commencing years, the OM-28JM has reached legendary 'unobtanium' status, with used examples commanding eye-watering prices when they do show up on the market.
Of course featuring an all-solid dovetail construction, the OMJM 20th Anniversary comprises an Engelmann Spruce top, East Indian Rosewood back and sides, Mahogany neck and 20 fret Ebony fingerboard with matching bridge. A white Tusq saddle is fitted, along with a Bone nut & Nickel open-geared Martin tuning machines. The body is double bound in Ivoroid, matching the end piece. The top is adorned with 'Bold Herringbone' purfling, along with a handsome Abalone rosette & black pickguard. The back features a 'Zig-Zag' inlay, with further visual appointments such as the East Indian Rosewood headstock overlay & Custom MoP fingerboard inlays working in conjunction with the Platinum Gray Burst finish to make it absolutely plain how special this instrument is.
The Mahogany neck plays exceptionally well. The neck specification is actually quite unusual for Martin, and echoes that of the 2003 OM-28JM with its Low Profile carve & 1.6875" nut width. Certainly, the neck feels easily manageable in the hand and well proportioned for a wide range of playing styles & techniques. The Ebony of the fretboard is luxurious under the fingers, & with its traditional 16" radius is practical for both chordal & melodic playing styles alike. The smooth lines of the OM body are as comfortable in the arms as ever, ensuring comfort for long gigs & practice sessions in either seated or standing positions.
The acoustic voice of the Martin OMJM 20th Anniversary is clear, precise & supremely well balanced across the frequency range. The OM body size has long been renowned for its clear, open and uniform response across all 6 strings. Striking the perfect balance between the strong bass response and volume of the dreadnought and the intimate, balanced sound of the Parlor, the tone is well suited to both chordal and melodic playing styles. The Sitka Spruce top projects beautifully, delivering ample volume and dynamic range whilst retaining clarity throughout. The East Indian Rosewood back and sides add a warmth and character to the sound which is well complemented by the brightness of the Spruce top. A beautifully made and aesthetically unique instrument, perfect for the discerning John Mayer fan or fingerstyle player.
