Here for sale we have an interesting and rare instrument from JJ Hucke. From the late '80s, through the '90s up to about the year 2000, JJ Hucke was a solo operation for Jens Hucke, producing boutique one-off instruments such as this custom build. Given the popularity of shred guitars at the time, many of these instruments were of the 'pointy' variety, and featured ergonomic, player-focussed designs. At the turn of the millennium, Jens folded the brand and relaunched it as JJ Guitars - an operation run by himself and his family. JJ guitars produced more conventional designs that appealed to a wider audience of players. Whilst certainly not mass produced, these instruments were no longer one-off productions. Around 2005 Jens departed the company and it passed into the hands of Jeff Guilford, who has maintained the quality of the instruments & reputation of the brand ever since.

Certainly produced prior to the 2000 rebrand, when consulting with Jeff, he was confident that this instrument was from the late '80s to early '90s period. The form factor of the guitar certainly appears to be inspired by the guitars of Joe Satriani. The body itself appears to  be made from Mahogany, whilst the neck is made from a highly Flamed Maple. The 24 fret fingerboard appears to be Rosewood, and is inlaid with MoP offset pattern fret markers. Black hardware is fitted including a Schaller double-locking tremolo system & Sperzel locking tuning machines. A pair of passive humbucking pickups are installed, with a full-size humbucker in the bridge and a hot-rail single-coil sized humbucker in the neck. These are wired to a 3-way blade switch, master volume & master tone controls.

The Flame Maple neck plays fantastically well, with a profile which might be described as a shallow 'C' shape, well suited to fast, technical playing styles. The nut width is similar to that of a Stratocaster at 1.656", however the fingerboard doesn't flare out much as you climb the neck, meaning that the neck feels rather narrow as you play. This is perfect for lightning fast licks and lead lines as it ensures notes are all within easy reach. The smooth satin finish to the rear of the neck assists with navigation of the 25.5" scale, and with the highly ergonomic double cutaway and sculpted heel design, the full range of the instrument remains within easy reach. We have measured the fingerboard radius to 20", which when paired with what appear to be Jumbo or even Extra Jumbo frets, the fingerboard is equipped for huge bends and fat playing aplenty.

Amplified, the pair of passive humbucking pickups deliver thick and full bodied tones, perfect for technical players. There is plenty of power on offer to produce a saturated overdrive, with the bridge pickup ensuring that your rhythm parts stay front and centre in the mix. There is a nice balanced mid range from the middle pickup selection, while the power of the hot rail in the neck is particularly impressive. It captures the attack and aggression of your playing very nicely, ensuring great tracking for low down riffing and accuracy in your lead lines. The controls are well placed and responsive, meaning that small adjustments whilst playing are easy to make and allow you to really dial in a great sound. A unique instrument which is sure to turn heads, with the build quality & playability to match its looks.

    Aesthetic Condition:

Headstock: Overall very good condition, the top edge demonstrates some light indentation that does not pierce the finish. Surrounding this, orange/brown discoloration is apparent to the finish. A small indentation is present near the G tuner. Between the A & D tuners, there are two parallel lines. We believe this is likely a repair made during the manufacturing process where tearout occurred when drilling the holes for the tuning machines.

Neck: Overall very good condition, the rear of the neck demonstrates light scratching throughout the register. This cannot be discerned beneath the thumb.

Body: Overall excellent condition, the front face demonstrates a very light indentation towards the treble side waist which is visible only under direct lighting at certain angles. Beside the pickups some very light scratching is apparent under direct lighting at certain angles.

    Condition of Frets:

The frets demonstrate moderate signs of use, with flattening of the crowns apparent throughout the register. There is a small amount of material remaining for future fret work.
