Here for sale we have an Ibanez SA100 in Antique Violin Sunburst. Made in Japan, the serial number dates the guitar to 1980. This is interesting, as catalogues & literature from the time and since point to the model being discontinued around 1979 to be replaced by the AS100, which featured a different headstock design. It is possible that the model was still being produced for a different territory, or as with many manufacturers at the time, the serial number was the last thing to be added- marking when the guitar left the factory rather than when it was produced. The specification of the instrument places it after 1978 due to the Quik Change tailpiece which was noted as a specification change in the ‘78 catalogue.
A semi-hollow construction is employed and comprises a Laminated Maple body with a Laminated Birch top, set-in Maple neck topped with a 22 fret Ebonized Rosewood fingerboard with Ivory binding. Other appointments include Smooth Tuner II tuning machines and a Gibraltar bridge with Quik Change tailpiece. A pair of Super 80 humbucking passive humbucking pickups are fitted, and are wired to a 3 way pickup selector and independent volume and tone controls.
The Maple neck plays very well, with the SA neck profile feeling somewhat like an Even ‘C’ shape which is slightly on the slimmer side for an instrument of this era. This provides comfortable playability and easy reach across the register, whilst the gloss finish to the rear assists with smooth navigation of the 24.75” scale length. Combined with the moderately wide 1.7” nut ensuring ample string spacing for accurate fretting, this neck is well suited for a wide range of playing styles & techniques. The Ebonized Rosewood of the fretboard is pleasant under the fingers, providing a tactile & durable playing surface.
The Super 80 pickups fitted in this guitar produce a punchy and bright tone. Originally introduced in 1976, the Super 80 humbuckers were designed to be more sensitive and easier to play than the existing Super 70s, and were used by the likes of Jerry Garcia & Bob Wier. These ceramic pickups are known to be powerful & articulate, sounding similar to Gibson’s PAF. The covers feature an etched ‘Hand butterfly wing’ design, celebrating how much easier the pickups were to tame whilst playing. The neck produces a full-bodied roundness which works very well for lead and solo tones. whilst the bridge position is of course brighter -working well for rhythm parts and riffs. The traditional twin humbucker controls offer plenty of versatility without over-complicating things.
Please be aware that for international buyers import fees are not included in our postage and packaging cost, this only covers the cost of the guitar being sent to you. Aesthetic Condition:
Headstock: Overall very good condition, the top corners demonstrate some indentation flattening the corners and piercing the finish. The top rear edge demonstrates some scuffing and paint transfer we have been unable to remove through regular cleaning. All aspects of the headstock demonstrate light scratching visible only under direct lighting. This is most notable to the front face.
Neck: Overall excellent condition, a small scuff that slightly discolors the finish can be identified to the rear of the neck in the middle register.
Body: Overall excellent condition, a small patch of scratching consistent with buckle rash is apparent to the center of the rear face. All aspects of the body demonstrate very light scratching visible only under direct lighting at certain angles.
Condition of Frets:
The frets demonstrate moderate signs of use with flattening of the crown apparent throughout the register. Some fret ends are lifting slightly, whilst others appear to have been glued in place. This does not affect playability. There is a small amount of room remaining for future fret work.
