Here for sale we have a Hagstrom Jimmy Oval Hole Archtop Electric Guitar in Natural Gloss finish. Made in Sweden, this guitar is a rare variant of the Hagstrom ‘Jimmy’. The Jimmy was named for its designer James D’Aquisto. After apprenticing under the legendary John D’Angelico in New York, James D’Aquisto went on to become one of the most celebrated archtop luthiers in the world, completing the work of his mentor after his death in ‘59 & eventually striking out under his own name. By the late ‘60s, he had been commissioned by Hagstrom to design a line of Jazz guitars. These guitars became known as the Hagstrom ‘Jimmy’, and featured a 16” body, asymmetrical D’Aquisto headstock design & a pair of F-Holes. Whilst a small run of these guitars were made, they didn’t enter mass production until around ‘76 and were discontinued by ‘79. This ‘Oval Hole’ Jimmy was introduced in ‘77 and discontinued in ‘79 alongside the F Hole Jimmy, with reportedly only around 350 Oval Holes ever made.
Made in Sweden, in the late 1970s, this guitar features a set-neck construction comprising a Laminated Birch body, a 2-piece Birch neck and a 20-fret Ebony fingerboard with matching compensated bridge. Other appointments include sealed Van Ghent tuners, an H-logo tailpiece and a Shadow AZ 48 Attila Zoller Jazz Humbucker with pickguard-mounted controls for volume and tone.
The 'D' profile 3-piece Maple neck sits comfortably in the hand, the slim profile allowing for fast and easy navigation without feeling too thin. The ‘D’ profile has a slightly flattened area to the centre rear, which promotes ergonomic thumb positioning and easy reach across the register- perfect for a wide range of playing styles and techniques. The Gloss finish to the rear of the neck assists with smooth navigation of the 24.75" scale length, whilst the Ebony fingerboard adds a touch of luxury to the playing experience.
The acoustic voice of the Jimmy Oval Hole is both soft and articulate, perfectly capturing the 'Jazz Box' tone that you would expect from a D’Aquisto-designed instrument. Chords sound distinctive and clear, whilst melodic lines are smooth. The hollowbody construction provides plenty of dynamic range which feels sensitive to the touch. The Shadow AZ 48 Attila Zoller Jazz Humbucker delivers a smooth tone which is equally at home as a solo instrument or blending into an ensemble mix. An interesting and unique instrument with a genuine vintage jazz vibe.

Aesthetic Condition:
Headstock: Overall very good condition. Mild indentation & chipping to the top rear edge lightly breaks through the finish, exposing the wood at the top rear. Light to mild scratching of the front face is visible under direct light, as is common with high gloss finishes. This causes a light hazing of the finish.
Neck: Overall good condition. Light to mild lacquer cracks are present at the rear of the neck, most notably to the bass side behind the nut. These have been tested and present no structural concern. A patch of finish has worn away at the treble side rear behind frets 9-10.The binding has shrunk away from the fret ends slightly, as can be expected with an instrument of this age.
Body: Overall very good condition. The front face demonstrates a finish crack which runs the length of the body on the bass side, with a further finish crack present to the side of the instrument. These have been tested and present no structural concern. Light to mild indentation is scattered around the body, in places piercing the finish slightly. This is perhaps most notable at the side of the instrument at the bass side lower bout. Very light delamination of the finish is occasionally apparent around the binding & purfling.
Condition of Frets:
The frets demonstrate notable signs of use, not affecting playability. There is only a small amount of material remaining for future fret work.
Current Set Up:
Truss Rod: Fully functional. Truss rod tool (3mm hex) not included.
Hardware: Fully functional with light signs of wear.
Structural: A slight gap is apparent surrounding the neck heel, suggesting this guitar may have had previous repair work performed to adjust the neck angle. This however does not flex and is firm. The neck angle on this instrument is correct.
