Here for sale we have a Gibson Memphis ES-335 'Fat Neck' semi-hollow electric guitar in Antique Ebony finish. Made in Gibson's Memphis factory in 2009, this guitar is not a full-on historic reissue but includes features more akin to the 1959 335 than current production models. A set-neck construction is employed, and comprises a 3-Ply Laminated Plain Maple body with lightweight Maple centreblock. The body is slimmer than modern 335's, falling much closer to the original 1959 specification. The Mahogany neck is patterned on the run of 521 ES-335s produced at the Kalamazoo factory in 1959, and is much thicker than those found on modern iterations of the instrument. Nickel hardware is fitted including an ABR-1 bridge and StopBar tailpiece as well as a set of Gibson deluxe tuning machines with 'Tulip' buttons. A pair of Gibson '57 Classic humbucking pickups are installed, and are wired to the traditional Es-335 controls.

The Mahogany neck plays beautifully, with the '50s Style 'Fat Neck' profile filling the handle nicely for a substantial and vintage-inspired playing experience. The profile might be described as a 'C' shape, with nicely rounded shoulders which ensure comfort across the register. Certainly, the neck is generously proportioned and produces a unique sensation when compared with modern Gibson neck profiles, making this instrument feel special. Other more familiar appointments include the Rosewood fingerboard with 12" radius which is practical for a wide range of styles and techniques whilst providing a pleasant and tactile playing surface. The familiar lines of the 335 body design are as comfortable in the arms as ever, allowing plenty of space for easy access to the controls.

The pair of Gibson '57 Classic humbucking pickups installed in this guitar deliver thick and full-bodied tones, exemplifying the rock and blues sounds that Gibson has long been renowned for. The neck position is warm and round, with plenty of power for pushing your lead lines and solos to the front of the mix. The bridge is of course brighter, perfect for rock rhythm parts and riffing because it can handle a serious amount of gain. There is all of the snarl and bite that we associate with rockin' tones, yet at the same time definition and clarity is retained. The pickups clean up nicely too, with shimmering clean sounds ready for the softer sections of the set. The semi-hollow construction ensures a resonant and lively sound, with plenty of dynamic range on offer. A unique vintage-spec ES-335.
