Here for sale we have an incredibly rare Gibson Custom Shop CF-100E left handed acoustic-electric flat-top guitar in Vintage Sunburst finish. Made in the Bozeman, Montana Gibson Custom Shop in 2008, this guitar is a very rare reissue of one of the world's first acoustic-electric guitars with a cutaway. The CF-100 was based on the L-Series platform, introduced in 1950 and was Gibson's first flat-top acoustic guitar with a cutaway. In 1951 they released the CF-100E which also featured a P90 pickup. Both models were discontinued by 1959, with only around 1200 ever being produced. With only very limited reissue runs, the model has remained very scarce, with left handed examples being even harder to come by. Some reports state that only 5-10 lefties were ever produced across all reissues.
Of course featuring an all-solid construction, this instrument comprises a Sitka Spruce top, Tropical Mahogany back & sides, Mahogany neck & 19 fret Rosewood fingerboard with matching bridge. A Bone saddle & nut are fitted, along with a set of vintage-style 3-on-a-plate Kluson tuning machines with cream oval buttons. The body is double bound in Ivoroid, with multi-stripe purfling & rosette seen to the front, along with a Faux Tortoise pickguard. The fingerboard is inlaid with MoP trapezoids, matching the Gibson logo & headstock crown. A single, surface-mounted P90 pickup is installed, and wired to master volume & tone controls.
The Mahogany neck plays very well, with the Vintage Medium 'C' profile filling the hand nicely for a substantial yet articulate playing experience across the register. The Rosewood of the fretboard is pleasant under the fingers & with its 12" radius feels traditionally Gibson. The smooth lines of the L-Series body are comfortable in the arms, and are compact enough for easy playing in both standing & seated positions. The florentine cutaway enhances access to the upper frets, really opening up the full register of the instrument.
The acoustic voice of the Gibson Custom Shop CF-100E is bright, clear & exceptionally well balanced thanks to its small stature. Of course as a small-bodied instrument the bass response is less pronounced than we find with larger guitars, however this works very well with the brightness afforded by the Sitka Spruce top. The mid range sounds accurate & clear, whilst the top end is bright without being too brittle. The Gibson P90 pickup being mounted on the top actually impacts the acoustic tone, slightly reducing the sustain for an authentic delta blues sound. Amplified, the P90 delivers vintage warmth by the bucketload, and works well for jazz & blues tones. An incredibly rare bird.
