Here for sale we have a Fender Telecaster Deluxe in Natural finish. Made in the USA, the serial number and specification of this guitar indicate that it was manufactured in 1977, in the peak of Fender's CBS era. The guitar carries all of the hallmarks of the CBS era, including the 3-bolt 'F' stamped neck plate, 'Bullet' truss rod nut & Schaller Deluxe 'Fender' stamped tuning machines (fitted to the Telecaster Deluxe from 1973). The Telecaster Deluxe was introduced in 1972 alongside the revamped Telecaster Custom, showcasing Fender's new Seth Lover-designed Wide Range CuNiFe humbucking pickup and capitalising on the hard-rock sounds that were popular at the time. Neither guitar proved to be big sellers, and the original run was discontinued by '81.
Naturally, a bolt-on construction is employed and comprises an Ash body, Maple neck and 21 fret Maple fingerboard. Chrome hardware is fitted including a string-through-body hardtail bridge and Schaller Deluxe tuning machines. A pair of Fender Wide Range humbucking pickups are installed, and are wired to a 3-way toggle switch and independent volume & tone controls. The controls -as well as their layout- really do echo the design of the Gibson Les Paul. It's easy to see that Fender were using this guitar to compete directly with Gibson during this era, but with their unique pickup design the guitar does produce a unique tone.
The Maple neck plays fantastically well, with the '70s neck profile feeling somewhat like a 'U' shape and providing a substantial yet articulate playing experience in all registers. The profile will feel familiar to those used to modern Fender necks, but provides a little more thickness for an authentic vintage playing experience. The Gloss finish to the rear of the neck assists with smooth navigation of the 25.5" scale, whilst the playwear that has accumulated over the years adds a real sense of mojo to the playing experience which is very inspiring in the hands. The Maple fingerboard is pleasant under the fingers, and with the 7.25" radius delivers a suitably vintage playing experience.
Fender's Wide Range pickup was designed by Seth Lover, who was responsible for Gibson's PAF humbuckers in the '50s. Lover had jumped ship to Fender by '67, and was the perfect man for the job when Fender were looking to break their reputation as the 'single-coil company' and gain a foothold in the Gibson-dominated humbucker market. The Wide Range humbucker makes use of 6 magnetised pole pieces rather than the bar magnet and screw arrangement of the Gibson PAF. Due to the difficulty of machining AlNiCo into threaded rod magnets, Fender chose to use CuNiFe magnets (Copper/Nickel/Iron) instead. As they produce less output than AlNiCo magnets, more windings were needed to produce enough output- resulting in a much larger enclosure than a typical humbucker. CuNiFe magnets have become obsolete in all other industries, meaning production has entirely ceased. Even Fender's reissues of the pickup use AlNiCo magnets voiced and disguised to look and sound like the originals. This has increased demand for the originals due to their scarcity.
