Here for sale we have an Avalon A25cx Grand Auditorium electro-acoustic guitar in Natural Semi-Gloss finish. Handmade in the Northern Ireland Newtownards factory in 2005, this guitar is part of Avalon's early flagship Legacy Series. The series was introduced at the top end of the Avalon range in 2003, and discontinued in 2013 to be replaced by the Ard Ri and Pioneer series. Avalon Guitars was originally founded as The Lowden Guitar Co. in 1989 after purchasing the purpose-built factory, staff and assets of Lowden from receivership. When the licence agreement with George Lowden expired in 2003, Avalon was born, and grew into the worldwide guitar company we know today. Whilst distinct from Lowden, Avalon guitars- especially those made in the Newtownards factory- share Lowden's fantastic build quality and excellent reputation amongst players.

This instrument features an all-solid construction comprising an impressive selection of tonewoods. The body is made with Indian Rosewood back and sides, with an Alaskan Yellow Cedar top. The body is double bound with Pearwood, whilst the Rosette comprises Abalone, Rosewood, Sycamore & Mahogany. The neck is of 2-piece Mahogany construction, and is topped with a Rosewood headplate and 20 fret Ebony fingerboard. The bridge is made with Rosewood to match the back and sides, whilst the saddle and nut are Bone. A set of Gold Avalon tuning machines are finished with Ebony buttons. A Fishman Ellipse Matrix Blend system is installed, with both an undersaddle piezo pickup and electret condenser cardioid microphone. These are wired to the discreetly sound hole-mounted preamp, which features controls for volume, mic/pickup blend, phase reverse and microphone trim.

The 2-piece Mahogany neck plays beautifully, with a profile which could be described as a moderately-sized 'C' shape. This fills the hand for a substantial and confidence-inspiring grip whilst remaining slim enough for tricky chord voicings and articulate melodic playing. Certainly, the neck is practical for a wide range of playing styles and techniques; feeling well suited to chord playing, melodic lines and fingerpicking patterns alike. The Ebony of the fingerboard is nice and dark in appearance, and along with it's supremely tight grain provides a smooth, durable and luxurious playing surface. The Grand Auditorium body shape feels great in the arms, ensuring comfort in both standing and seated positions, whilst the cutaway opens up the full range of the instrument.

The acoustic voice of the Avalon A25cx is rich and crisp, delivering outstanding clarity across the frequency range. Due to limited supply, Alaskan Yellow Cedar is not that commonly used in guitar building despite its notable qualities. We have had confirmation from the manufacturer that this instrument is one of just five that Avalon have ever produced with this tonewood. Certainly, the top projects well, delivering plenty of dynamic range along with a supremely clear and precise tone. The Indian Rosewood back and sides add depth and richness to the sound, working in conjunction with the Grand Auditorium body design to deliver a warm bass response and clear mid range. The on-board Fishman Ellipse Matrix Blend hybrid pickup and preamp system does a fantastic job of conveying the acoustic voice of the instrument in recording and live situations, meaning this guitar is ready for wherever the gig takes you.

    Aesthetic Condition:

Headstock: Overall very good condition. The top edge shows light scuffing and indentation, with a small patch of paint transfer to the bass side corner. Light indentation which does not pierce the finish is present to the centre of the rear face, consistent with storage of a capo or clip tuner. Very light indentation to the bass side edge is apparent between the E & A machine heads. Light scratching to the front face is visible under direct light, as is common with high gloss finishes. This is most notable near the B tuner.

Neck: Overall very good condition. A mild indentation which has cracked the finish is apparent to the bass side rear of the neck behind fret 11. This is felt under the thumb but does not impact the overall playability of the instrument. A small area of light indentation is apparent to the centre rear of the neck behind fret 2. The fingerboard demonstrates light indentation in the early register which cannot be felt beneath the string. The finish at either side of the fret tangs has chipped away throughout the register.

Body: Overall very good condition. Consistent light indentation to the front face is concentrated mainly around the bottom edge. These markings crack the finish slightly in places. Similar markings can be seen throughout the sides and edges. Light scratching to the bass side waist is visible under direct light, consistent with playwear. A finish crack is apparent to the bass side shoulder. This has been tested, and does not flex under pressure or show light through. The rear face demonstrates light indentation and scratching, consistent with buckle rash.

    Condition of Frets:

The frets show notable signs of use, not affecting playability. Denting and flattening of the frets is noticeable through the early register. There is considerable material remaining for any future fretwork the new owner may wish to perform. There is very slight lifting of frets in the upper register, which does not affect playability.
