Here for sale we have a Yamaha SG-1000 in Brown Sunburst finish. Yamaha's 'Solid Guitar' range was first introduced in late 1973 as an all-new model, designed entirely in-house at Yamaha, whilst clearly taking several design cues from popular American-made instruments. Carlos Santana was an early adopter of the model in 1975, and can be seen playing an SG175B in photos from around the time. Santana wasn't satisfied with the instrument however, and worked with Yamaha to produce the SG-2000; the instrument often thought of as the definitive 'SG'. The SG-1000 was released shortly afterwards with very similar features but sported a set-neck rather than a thru-neck, as well as lacking the Brass sustain plate below the bridge.
The serial number of this particular example dates its manufacture to 1982 at the Yamaha Hamamatsu factory in Japan. A set neck construction is employed, and comprises a Mahogany body with 2-piece Carved Maple top, 3-piece Maple/Mahogany neck and 22 fret Ebony fingerboard. Gold hardware is fitted including a TOM-style bridge and stoptail, as well as a set of sealed Yamaha tuning machines. A pair of Yamaha 'Anti-Hum' High Output Shielded Pickups are installed, and are wired to a 3-way toggle switch and independent volume and tone controls, with push/push coil split functions on each tone knob.
The 3 piece Maple/Mahogany neck plays well, with a profile which might be described as a moderately-sized 'C' shape. More substantial than some contemporary neck profiles but not too far into 'baseball bat' territory, the neck is comfortable and practical across the register, and thanks to the years of playwear this particular example has seen provides a unique vibe which is very inspiring in the hands. The Ebony of the fingerboard is luxurious under the fingers, and with a traditional 12" radius is practical for a wide range of playing styles and techniques. The dual-cutaway body design enhances access to the upper register, whilst the contour to the rear of the body improves comfort on long playing sessions.
Amplified, the pair of Yamaha 'Anti-Hum' pickups installed in this instrument deliver thick and full-bodied tones, with plenty of power just as we have come to expect of instruments in this style. The neck is warm, and produces a smooth tone which works exceptionally well on lead lines and solos. The bridge position is of course brighter, and with a higher output can push your amp into a searing, saturated distortion tone which is perfect for bluesy-rock riffs and rhythm parts. The on-board controls offer comprehensive tone-shaping opportunities, and with the addition of coil split functions offers a seriously versatile range of sounds.
