Here for sale we have a Westbury Deluxe W2210 electric guitar in Antique Walnut finish. Made in the Mastsumoku plant in Japan in 1980, this guitar is part of a well-regarded era in the Japanese production of guitars, with many brands having guitars manufactured by the Matsumoku company due to their excellent build quality. This was largely due to the combined use of CNC machines and skilled labour to complete the instruments. Guitars of this era are quite easily recognised by their similar appearance, 3-pc Maple necks and the use of DiMarzio Super Distortion pickups. Other brands produced by Matsumoku include Aria, Aria Pro II & Westone as well as Westbury.

This guitar features a set-neck construction comprising a Canadian Hard Maple body with carved top, 3-pc Maple neck and 22 fret Rosewood fingerboard. Chrome hardware is fitted, including a Harmonica-style bridge and stop bar tailpiece, along with Westbury sealed tuning machines. A pair of DiMarzio Super Distortion humbucking pickups are installed, with the bridge  being a 'Dual Sound'. These are wired to a 3-way toggle switch, independent volume & tone controls, as well as a mini toggle which allows you to control the 'Dual Sound' of the bridge pickup - essentially a coil split. The serial number of this guitar indicates its manufacture in 1980, as well as features such as the brass nut, fingerboard and headstock binding and the position of the upper strap button inside the lower horn rather than on the rear face.

The 3-pc Maple neck plays very well, with a profile which could be described as a rather slim 'D' shape. The slightly flattened area to the centre encourages ergonomic thumb positioning, whilst the slimness of the neck ensures that fast licks and melodic lines are an absolute breeze in any register. The gloss finish to the rear assists with smooth navigation of the 24.75" scale,, whilst the generous cutaways ensure unrestricted access to the top frets. The Rosewood of the fretboard is pleasant under the fingers, and with its 10" radius is practical for a wide range of styles and techniques.

The pair of DiMarzio Super Distortion humbucking pickups installed in the instrument deliver thick and full-bodied tones, just as you would expect. The neck is round and powerful, with plenty of grunt for driving your lead lines and solos to the front of the mix. The bridge is of course brighter, and can handle a serious amount of gain for a thick, saturated tone for those rock rhythm parts and riffs. The 'Dual Sound' mini toggle is intended to allow a switch from clean to drive sounds right on the guitar, essentially functioning as a coil split. In conjunction with the independent volume and tone controls this ensures that the instrument can achieve a broad range of tones quite comfortably. A typically well-made Japanese instrument with genuine prestige, not to mention a unique and exciting vintage vibe.

    Aesthetic Condition:

Headstock: Overall very good condition. A mild scuff mark is present at the treble side top corner. Very light scratching to all aspects of the headstock is visible under direct light, as is common with high gloss finishes.

Neck: Overall very good condition. Light indentation which does not pierce the finish is present throughout the rear of the neck. These markings are very slightly felt under the thumb in playing position but do not affect the overall playability of the instrument. The fingerboard demonstrates some very light scratching, difficult to discern against the natural grain of the wood and not felt under the finger.

Body: Overall very good condition. The front face demonstrates consistent light scratching throughout, causing a slight hazing of the finish beside the pickups at the treble side waist and at the bass side of the bridge. Light indentation to the lower bout is most notable behind the tailpiece. The sides and rear of the guitar demonstrate inconsistent light scratching and indentation, visible only under direct lighting at certain angles. A more notable chip is present at the bottom edge of the rear face, exposing the wood.

    Condition of Frets:

This instrument has had a fret level and recrown in-house to ensure the best playability. There is moderate material remaining for any light fret work the new owner may wish to perform. The bass side of the 22nd fret has been filed flat by the previous owner. This does not impact playability.
