Here for sale we have an Ibanez JP20 Joe Pass Signature hollow body electric guitar in Brown Sunburst finish. Made in Japan in 1990, this guitar is one of the last from Ibanez's run of Joe Pass signature models, and is based on the D'Aquisto 16" archtop which was made for him by James D'Aquisto. Joe used his JP20 throughout the '80s, both on the road and in recordings.
A set-neck construction is employed, and comprises a Spruce top with Maple back and sides, 3-piece Maple neck and 22 fret Ebony fingerboard with matching bridge and tailpiece. Gold hardware is fitted including Ibanez/Gotoh sealed tuning machines with Pearloid buttons. A single Ibanez Super '58 passive humbucking pickup is installed, and is wired to master volume and tone controls. The pickup is mounted closer to the bridge than a typical Jazz guitar thanks to the combination of the 25.5" scale and 22 fret fingerboard, rather than the traditional 20 frets.
The Maple neck plays very well, with the JP20 profile feeling somewhat like a slim 'D' shape. This promotes ergonomic thumb positioning thanks to the flattened area to the centre of the rear. The fingerboard feels fairly wide, with a nut width of 1.752" which provides ample string spacing for accurate fretting. The Ebony fingerboard is pleasant under the fingers, and with Pearl and Abalone split parallelogram inlays adds a sense of luxury to the playing experience.
The hollow body construction of the JP20 ensures an open and airy tone, well suited to the swing and jazz genres that Pass made his name in. The brightness of the Spruce and Maple construction is well complemented by the large hollow body construction which adds a darkness to the tone. The single Ibanez Super '58, which is mounted almost in what one might call the middle position captures the nuance of your playing very well, and along with the simple controls allows you to dial in the perfect mellow tone for those smooth jazz lines.
Please be aware that for international buyers import fees are not included in our postage and packaging cost, this only covers the cost of the guitar being sent to you. Aesthetic Condition:
Headstock: Overall good condition, the top edge demonstrates moderate chipping and indentation, slightly revealing the wood at the treble side rear corner. The front face demonstrates moderate scratching and some chipping of the top clear coat. The rear demonstrates consistent light scratching visible only under direct lighting at certain angles.
Neck: Overall fair condition. The finish has worn away entirely at both treble and bass side edges of the rear of the neck, revealing the wood beneath. This wood has also stained over time from regular use. There is a scratch across the rear behind the nut which can be felt under the thumb. The fingerboard demonstrates indentation which cannot be felt in the playing position throughout the register. Most notably, the fingerboard extension has snapped and been re-attached to the neck. This is a good repair and does not impact playability. However, it is visible. The holes for the scratchplate have been filled but are visible under close inspection.
Body: Overall fair condition. Notable finish cracking is apparent towards the bottom edge of the lower bout. This does not impact the structural stability of the instrument. An area of lacquer has peeled away at the treble side of the pickup. Screw holes have been rather crudely filled where the pickguard would have been, and where the upper strap button was once located at the rear of the heel. All aspects of the body demonstrate moderate to notable indentation, chipping and scratching of the finish.
Condition of Frets:
The frets show moderate signs of use, not affecting playability. Denting and flattening of the frets is noticeable throughout the register. There is considerable material remaining for any fret work the new owner may wish to perform.
