Here for sale we have a Fender Boxer Series Precision Bass in Sherwood Green Metallic finish. Made in Japan, this instrument is a modern reissue of Fender Japan's Boxer series from the mid '80s. Originally released under the Squier name in 1983 for the Japanese domestic market, the instruments were initially known as the Contemporary Series. At this time Fender was being purchased from CBS and due to the closure of the US Fullerton factory, the Japanese instruments were really the only guitars available on the market. The Boxer series was developed in 1984 and sold in Japan with a Fender badge, whilst the Contemporary series continued to be exported to western markets. The Boxer series was discontinued in 1988, and was reissued briefly in 2021.
Aimed at the more metal-oriented player with flatter fingerboards and thicker sounding pickups, the Boxer series also boasted some unmistakable looks thanks to their Black painted headstocks and metallic finishes. This Boxer Series Precision Bass, or 'Jazz Bass Special' features a bolt-on construction comprising a Basswood P Bass body, with a Maple J Bass neck; hence the Jazz Bass Special moniker. A 20 fret Rosewood fingerboard with jumbo frets is featured, along with Black hardware including a 4-Saddle Standard bridge and Gotoh vintage-style open-gear tuning machines. Two single-coil pickups are installed in a PJ configuration, with a split-coil P bass pickup in the middle and J bass pickup in the bridge. These are wired to a 3-way toggle switch, independent volume & master TBX controls.
The Maple neck plays very well, with the Medium 'C' profile offering a smooth and responsive playing experience across the register. Certainly, the profile feels nicely manoeuvrable with easy reach in all fingerboard positions. The satin finish to the rear assists with smooth navigation of the 34" scale, whilst the generous cutaways ensure access to the top frets is unobstructed. The Rosewood of the fingerboard is nice and dark, and provides a smooth and durable playing surface, and with the 12" radius and Jumbo frets is practical for fast lines and hard riffing.
Amplified, the PJ configuration is as versatile as ever, facilitating a wide range of tones in a simple, easy to use package. a 3-way switch and independent volume controls allow you to select either pickup or blend them both in any combination. The TBX control allows you to further beef up the sound to fill out the low end of the mix with ease. The P bass split coil pickup in the middle is round and warm, with plenty of rumbling low end. The J bass single-coil in the bridge is brighter, capturing all the attack and spank of your playing for an urgent and aggressive bass tone when required. A seriously cool instrument with a unique look and feel.
