Here for sale we have an absolutely stunning Dana Bourgeois Signature OM acoustic guitar in Gloss Natural finish. Bourgeois Guitars are the life's work of Dana Bourgeois. Beginning in the early '70s in his college dorm room, he built his first guitars with skills learned from his father - a wood worker and his grandfather - a machinist. By '77 he'd started his own one-man shop in Brunswick, Maine. Immersing himself in the burgeoning bluegrass scene in the area at the time, Dana had the opportunity to receive feedback on his instruments from the legendary Tony Rice. After initially focussing on dreadnoughts, the pair found that in fact the OM design, which had fallen out of favour was perfectly suited to the demands of modern bluegrass players. Today you would be hard-pressed to find a manufacturer which does not offer an OM guitar. Bourgeois guitars have gone on to be one of the most desirable and luxurious brands around, with the small team of around 20 luthiers and craftspeople being personally overseen by Dana as they produce around 400 guitars a year.
This exquisite example left the workshop in 2010 and features a bolt-on construction comprising a Premium Eastern Red Adirondack Spruce top, Madagascan Rosewood back and sides, Mahogany neck, 20 fret Ebony fingerboard with matching bridge and a Ziricote headstock veneer. The body is double bound in Figured Koa with handsome DB Signature Herringbone purfling & Multicolor Herringbone backstrip. The Rosette is made up of intricately inlaid wood in a 'Signature' design, whilst the top is also adorned with a 'Tor-Tis' pickguard. The bridge pins, saddle and nut are all crafted from Bone, whilst the fingerboard inlays in their 'Short Squares & Diamonds' pattern are made from fossilized Ivory. The headstock logo is inlaid in Abalone, with a set of Gold Waverly open-gear tuning machines with Snakewood buttons completing a sublimely appointed instrument.
The Mahogany neck plays beautifully, with a profile which might be described as a very soft 'V' shape. Not pronounced at all, the 'V' very subtly encourages ergonomic thumb positioning across the register. The profile is substantial enough to inspire confidence in your left hand grip whilst remaining slim enough for articulate playing. With a fairly wide nut width of 1.75" and a volute, the playing experience is distinctly pre-war inspired. The Ebony of the fretboard is supremely luxurious under the fingers whilst providing a smooth and durable playing surface. The smooth lines and modest stature of the body are very comfortable in the arms, ensuring that long playing sessions are fatigue free.
The acoustic voice of the Bourgeois DB Signature OM is both rich and fabulously well balanced. The OM body size is favoured by a wide range of players due to its even response, and this instrument exemplifies exactly that. The low end is warm and gentle without being too soft, the mid range is open and clear whilst the high end is sparkling and clear. Together, these qualities converge to produce a tone which is authentically traditional. The Adirondack Spruce top projects beautifully, delivering a wide dynamic range which feels sensitive to the players' touch without any loss of clarity at high volumes. Whilst traditionally thought of as a fingerstyle players guitar, it has to be said that strummed chordal playing on this instrument is just as well balanced and rewarding. A truly exquisite piece.
